it doesn't really surprise me. amongst the tamilian population the concpet of "chinnai viidu" is quite popular.
the concept of this kind of a contract is also popular in Gujarat where the "maitri karar" - 'friendship' contract exists. exploitative to the woman - definitely
which is why we need the state to ensure that society does not end up imposing its will on people. be it caste, religion, or gender discrimination - it is illegal under law. society chooses to impose these. and the state needs to guarantee the freedom of the individual from societal idiocies.

I think the projection that you have got of kerala is contemporary, and from what you have said I believe that you have quite a blurred image about contemporary Kerala. You have to live in Kerala for atleast an year or two... interact with the local people to undertand what is Kerala and also the psyco-sociological make up of a Keralite.

I consider Kerala to be a cancerous place, much worser in its own way, than say Karnataka.

I can rant more and more about Kerala and even i can proove logically that Kerala could be compared to Bihar in many aspects.

But things have very very slowly started to change. Maybe it will be better someday.

I am quite shocked to read about this custom - I have always heard of and believed Kerala to be a matriarchal society - one in which women hold all the power in their hands...

that's a shocking story..

well in my opinion i feel there is always "known universe" and "unknown universe" and what comes into light.. falls under the known universe.. but that might be just the tip of the iceberg... who knows.. i don't think history can't even make a log of this. there might be women exploitation even in times of sita and other junta.

its the chaos that is inevitable in this human world.... but seeing such sick events make me rethink about the values on which our human society is built.. rewrite the laws for punishing such sick ass holes.
